The Unexpected 'Machine Repair' Incident in the Office
Our company has a new female clerk, and today the copier jammed. She struggled with it for a while but couldn't fix it, and was getting frustrated and sweaty. I decided to step in and help, but ended up putting myself in an awkward situation.
I knelt down and reached into the machine to pull out the jammed paper. The clerk looked on anxiously and said, 'Oh no, don't force it! I can hear the sound of tearing. Take it easy, and if all else fails, try it from the back.' My heart skipped a beat, and I bumped my head on the machine, perfectly reenacting an office 'machine repair' farce.
Just then, our boss happened to walk by, looking displeased. 'Do you have to add such a dramatic script to fixing a printer?' he said. The clerk and I were both taken aback, and the atmosphere became extremely awkward. But unexpectedly, our boss's comment rescued us from our embarrassment and made us both burst out laughing.
This little incident may be over, but it taught me that sometimes what's most needed in the office isn't professional skills, but rather a sense of humor and interpersonal skills at the right moment.
