A Treasure Trove of WeChat's Past Versions: A Surprising Discovery on GitHub
Do you still remember the first version of WeChat? The interface and features were vastly different from what we have today. With each update, someone always laments: "Why can't it stay the same?" "Why change this feature?" "Why can't I use this plugin anymore?"
Behind these questions and complaints lies a fact: Tencent's official website usually only provides the latest installation package, making it difficult to find historical versions. However, I recently stumbled upon a surprise on GitHub: a project dedicated to collecting historical versions of WeChat for Windows.
The project uses GitHub Actions to automatically monitor new WeChat releases, archiving the installation package, version number, and verification information in the Releases section, creating a continuously updated repository of historical versions. Currently, it has collected dozens of versions, with some early versions even retrieved from internet archives.
The existence of this project not only satisfies our nostalgia for old WeChat versions but also provides a convenient backup and recovery method. Imagine if you lost important chat records or files due to an update - now you can easily restore to a previous version.
Of course, the significance of this project goes beyond that. It also gives us the opportunity to explore WeChat's development history and understand its evolution from a simple instant messaging tool to a feature-rich platform.
