The Extreme Measures of Motherly Love: Protection or Harm?
I recently heard a shocking story about a doctor and her grandson with cerebral palsy. This story got me thinking, what is true motherly love? Is it unconditional giving and sacrifice, or protection and control?
The protagonist of the story is a doctor whose daughter gave birth to a son who was diagnosed with severe cerebral palsy at the age of one. As a doctor, she knew the harsh reality of the disease, so she made an extreme decision: while her daughter and son-in-law were away, she took the child and sent him to a distant welfare institution.
When her daughter found out that her child was missing, she asked her mother where the child was, but she refused to say. Her daughter rarely contacted her after that, thinking she had done something wrong. However, the doctor said she didn't regret her decision, believing she was protecting her daughter.
This story has sparked my thoughts. Is this kind of motherly love good or bad? Is it true love and care, or excessive protection and control? As a mother, was her behavior motivated by love and responsibility for her daughter, or by her own fears and anxieties?
I think this question has no simple answer. Everyone's experiences and values are different, and we can't judge others' actions as right or wrong. However, this story has made us start thinking about what true motherly love is and what we should do as parents.
