Queuing up for two-cent eggs: the dignity and helplessness of the elderly
Recently, a new supermarket opened downstairs, offering two free eggs every day with flyers. At six o'clock in the morning, there was a long queue of adults and aunties, and there was even a fight in the queue for jumping in line. I looked at Uncle Wang, who was walking unsteadily on crutches, and I was really puzzled: ‘Is it worth it for two cents for an egg? ’ The neighbor next to me said quietly: ‘They are not taking advantage, they are proving that they can still make some contribution to the family with their old bones. ’
After hearing this, I felt sad. Society always laughs at the elderly for being greedy, but they don’t know that in their increasingly marginalized lives, being ‘still useful’ is their last dignity. Those seemingly funny scrambles are actually helpless struggles against aging and uselessness. Their lives have been eroded by the years, and their only dignity is that they can still do something for the family, even if it is picking up eggs.
We always say that young people should respect the elderly, but do we really understand the elderly? Do we really understand their inner world? Their fears, their expectations, their helplessness... We always regard the elderly as a group, a group that needs to be taken care of, but forget that they are also flesh and blood people, and they also have their own dreams, their own pride, and their own dignity.
That day, I watched Uncle Wang walking home on crutches, and I was filled with emotion. How should we treat the elderly? How should we understand them? How should we respect their dignity? These questions are worthy of our deep thought.
