I still remember that summer when I was on vacation at my relatives' house in the countryside. One day, my relatives told me about an unbelievable incident. They told me that a paraplegic carpenter, who was over 50 years old, had come to their village to work for a family. He was hired to work for half a month, and the family provided him with food and lodging. The carpenter was very diligent, working during the day and resting at night. After half a month, the carpenter finished his work and left. Years later, the family had a son. When the child grew up to be three or four years old, everyone noticed that he looked exactly like the carpenter. Not just a little similar, but an exact miniature version. The neighbors were all gossiping behind the family's back, speculating whether the child was indeed the carpenter's son. Later, the family somehow arranged for the paraplegic carpenter to come and take the child away. I saw the carpenter with my own eyes. He was paralyzed from the waist down, with legs as thin as sticks, and had to use a pair of wooden crutches to move around, hopping like a frog on the ground. That image is forever etched in my memory. I couldn't imagine how the carpenter and the family had managed to conceive a child together. The process must have been extremely difficult and painful. The incident made me realize that there are too many unknowns in life, too many unpredictable factors. We can't control every detail of our lives; we can only do our best. The incident also made me cherish life more and love it more.
