Empathy Requires Energy
Empathy towards others is predicated on not being exhausted, a rather intriguing perspective. We often hear the phrase 'be considerate of others,' but seldom do we ponder the prerequisites for empathy. Indeed, when someone is drained, it's a challenge to not lose their mind, let alone be considerate of others.
In life, we encounter various pressures and difficulties that can leave us feeling drained. At such times, what we need is rest and support, not the added burden of empathizing with others. Empathy requires a certain level of energy and mental fortitude, which can be depleted when we're exhausted, making it difficult to care for others.
Thus, the prerequisite for empathy is that we ourselves are not exhausted. Only when we have sufficient energy and mental reserves can we truly care for and empathize with others. This is akin to the safety instructions on an airplane, where the flight attendants advise you to secure your own oxygen mask before assisting others. If you're unable to breathe, you can't help others.
Therefore, we must learn to take care of ourselves and avoid burnout. Only when we're healthy and full of vitality can we empathize with and help others. This is a vital life lesson we must remember.
