Downward Mobility: From Riches to Simplicity
Have you ever heard of the term 'downward mobility'? It's been trending on social media lately, with people sharing their own stories of downward mobility. Today, I want to share a story about one of my college classmates.
He came from a wealthy family - really wealthy. By 2014, his father's net worth had already exceeded 2 billion. Imagine having a billionaire for a father; life must have been incredibly luxurious. However, a car accident changed everything. His father passed away, the company's shareholders began to fight, debts piled up, and the family business collapsed overnight.
I remember how he suddenly became very low-key, eating with us in the cafeteria and even starting to study. Our class advisor knew about his family situation and took the time to talk to him, asking him about his plans for the future. He said he wouldn't attend college after high school, that he still had four cars, 5.6 million in savings, two houses in Beijing, and six storefronts. He planned to live off the income from the storefronts, and his family's expenses would be more than covered.
I was taken aback by his response. Apparently, his idea of being down on his luck was completely different from ours. He had gone from being a rich second-generation heir to a storefront owner. I suppose that's what downward mobility is all about.
