Changsha Girl: The Struggles and Helplessness of Dropping Out to Work
I'm a girl from Changsha, and I never attended high school. My parents both remarried and had children in their new families. My sister and I dropped out of school at a young age and started working because we couldn't support ourselves. This is not an uncommon situation in our area; many girls either get harassed or can't get paid, so is it true that minors are doomed to be bullied?
I still remember my first job when I was 16. I had to drop out of school due to family pressure. It wasn't easy to find a job, as many places required us to be at least 18, or even have a high school diploma. We minors could only work in small factories or restaurants. The working conditions were poor, and the pay was meager.
Sometimes I wonder, if I could finish high school or even go to college, would my life be different? But reality is cruel, and my parents have new families, so they don't care about our lives. We can only rely on ourselves and support each other. My sister and I often talk about our dreams, hoping that one day we can escape this difficult life and live a better one.
I hope that by sharing my story, I can raise awareness about the rights of minors. We are not a vulnerable group; we have our own dreams and pursuits. What we need is fair treatment and support.
