The Degree of Emotional Investment: Finding Balance in Life
Lately, I've had a profound realization. We're often taught to be filial to our parents, loving to our spouses, and caring to our children, but in doing so, we tend to neglect a crucial aspect: the degree of emotional investment. What is the degree of emotional investment? Simply put, it's about finding a balance in relationships, not being too greedy or too indulgent.
When it comes to our parents, we're often taught to be filial. However, being filial doesn't necessarily mean being empathetic. Empathy is a deep understanding and feeling, whereas being filial is more about actions and responsibilities. We can be filial to our parents without necessarily being empathetic towards them. Similarly, when it comes to our spouses, we're often taught to be loving. However, being loving doesn't necessarily mean seeking love. Seeking love is about needs and expectations, whereas being loving is more about giving and supporting.
In these relationships, we often neglect our own emotional needs. We try to satisfy others' needs while ignoring our own. As a result, we often feel empty and unfulfilled. Therefore, we need to find a balance, not being too greedy or too indulgent. We need to learn to say no, to refuse, and to give ourselves space.
Learning to give ourselves space means learning to take a step back. Taking a step back isn't about retreating, but about giving ourselves time and space to reflect and adjust. With this attitude, we can find balance in life, avoiding excessive greed and indulgence.
