Men Have It Tough Too: The Invisible Shackles of Societal Expectations
Men Have It Tough Too: Without a luxury watch, you're seen as lacking substance; without networking, you're seen as lacking connections; without being eloquent, you're seen as having low emotional intelligence; without drinking or smoking, you're seen as not being part of the group; without loving the spotlight, you're seen as too introverted; without being competitive, you're seen as lacking ambition; without showing off, you're seen as lacking ability. This is a popular saying on social media that highlights the frustrations men face in society.
Every time I see this, I think back to my own experiences. As a man, I've also been bound by these invisible shackles. I remember in college, I was ridiculed by my classmates for not drinking or smoking, and wasn't considered a 'real man.' Later, when I started working, I found that not networking would lead my colleagues to question my social skills and connections.
These seemingly insignificant things actually reflect the many expectations and pressures society places on men. We're expected to be strong, rich, powerful, and skilled in social interactions. If we can't meet these expectations, we're seen as failures or at least not 'qualified' men.
But are these expectations really reasonable? Why can't we simply be ourselves without being bound by these invisible shackles? Why can't we choose our own lifestyle without being judged by others? These questions have always troubled me, and perhaps many other men as well.
