The True Meaning of Sharing: No More Self-Sacrifice
Today, I witnessed a mother teaching her daughter a valuable lesson at a restaurant. The girl had only two pieces of meat left on her plate, one big and one small. The mother asked her, 'Do you want to give me the big one or the small one?' I thought the mother would scold the girl, but instead, she asked this question. The daughter replied without hesitation, 'I'll give you the small one, I want to eat the big one.'
I assumed the mother would continue to scold the girl, telling her that she should give the big piece to her mother, who needed it more. But to my surprise, the mother praised her, saying, 'Good job, sweetie! Remember, sharing means giving others what you don't need, not sacrificing what you need for others.'
As I listened, I felt my long-held notion crumbling. I was taught differently in school! I always thought sharing meant giving others what I needed, not what I had to spare. This idea had been deeply ingrained in my mind until today, when it was completely overturned.
I began to think, why were we taught to give others what we need? Is that really the true meaning of sharing? Or were we just taught to sacrifice ourselves to meet others' needs?
I think this mother's approach is the true meaning of sharing. Sharing shouldn't mean sacrificing ourselves; it should mean giving others what we don't need. Only then can we truly help others and experience the joy of sharing.
