Dividing Property Too Early, Filial Piety Scattered
An elderly man had four sons and two daughters, living in a rural area. In his time, his family was considered well-off, with 30 acres of land and a good house in the countryside. After his sons got married, they were very filial, competing to help him with various tasks, each acting like a model son.
The old man, pleased, distributed the dozens of acres of land and the house among his four sons. After the distribution, the four sons no longer cared for him. They even scolded him for being biased, saying they had received too little. The old man felt hurt, but he had no choice, having already given away all his property.
Until the old man passed away, his four sons rarely visited. They did not take care of him and showed no filial piety. As the old man lay on his deathbed, he finally realized that dividing the property too early had scattered the filial piety. He felt foolish for giving away his property to his sons so quickly.
This incident tells us that filial piety and property are two different things. Filial piety cannot be measured by property, nor can it be exchanged for material goods. True filial piety should come from the heart, not from material temptation.
