The Rise of Robots: The End Goal of Business is Consumption, Not Production
In recent years, various industries have been working to reduce their dependence on humans. We have unmanned factories, unmanned driving, unmanned cashiers, unmanned convenience stores, unmanned warehouses, unmanned delivery, AI customer service, AI doctors, AI lawyers, AI programmers... Almost all industries are trying to use robots and artificial intelligence to replace human labor. Although this will make bosses happy because costs have decreased; capitalists are also happy because profits have increased. Consumers will also be happy because prices have become cheaper.
However, as more and more people lose their jobs, what will they use to consume? Without income, there is no consumption. Without consumption, even the cheapest goods cannot be sold. Robots can produce cars, but they won't buy cars. AI can write advertisements, but it won't place orders. Unmanned driving can drive cars, but it won't hail a cab. Companies are desperate to save labor costs, but in the end, they may also save their customers.
Because the end goal of any business is not production, but consumption. The foundation of the economy is not machines, but people. Now, we are facing a crucial problem: how to maintain economic vitality and consumption momentum in the era of robots and artificial intelligence?
Enterprises need to think about how to increase consumers' purchasing power while reducing costs. Governments need to think about how to ensure employees' rights and social stability while encouraging enterprises to innovate and save costs. Consumers need to think about how to maintain their jobs and income while enjoying the convenience brought by robots and artificial intelligence.
