Paying Off Debts at a Wedding, the Creditor's Move Was Too Ruthless!
Recently, a friend's son got married, and I was in charge of collecting the gift money. At the wedding, the atmosphere was lively, with many guests in attendance. Suddenly, a man walked up, handed over 500 yuan as a gift, but instead of giving me the red envelope, he pulled out a yellowed IOU from his pocket. He owed me 10,000 yuan, which he had been dragging his feet on paying back for 6 years. Today, he came to give a gift, and I considered it as paying off the debt, so I asked him to give me 9,500 yuan directly.
I was stunned on the spot, it was the first time I had seen such a move. My friend saw the situation and quickly pulled him aside, wanting to negotiate privately. But the creditor refused to budge, instead raising his voice and shouting, 'Paying off debts is a matter of course!' The atmosphere immediately became awkward, with all the guests gathering around.
My friend, considering the wedding atmosphere and not wanting to lose face in front of the in-laws, had no choice but to grit his teeth and hand over 9,500 yuan on the spot. The creditor took the money, didn't say a word, and turned around to leave. Throughout the process, the guests were all stunned, seemingly thinking: was the creditor right or wrong?
After the wedding, my friend and I discussed the matter. My friend thought the creditor's move was too ruthless, completely disregarding others' face and the atmosphere. I think that since it's a debt, it would have to be paid back sooner or later. The question is, why did he have to do it at the wedding? Was it to take advantage of the wedding to settle the debt?
A wedding should be a joyful gathering, why turn it into a place to pay off debts? Is it because the creditor thought the wedding atmosphere made it the best time to collect the debt? Or did he simply not care about others' feelings, as long as he got his money back?
