The Cost of Losing Autonomy: A Cautionary Tale of Marriage
A female university classmate of mine faced a difficult decision after having children. Her mother-in-law gave her two options: either the mother-in-law would take care of the child and she would pay her 4,500 yuan per month, or she would quit her job to take care of the child herself and her mother-in-law would give her 6,500 yuan per month. At the time, she was working for a foreign company with a monthly salary of 12,000 yuan. After some thought, she decided that not working would still bring in money and allow her to take care of her child personally, so she quit her job.
That was five years ago. Later, she had another child, a boy and a girl, and it seemed like a perfect family. However, this led to her completely leaving the workforce. In recent years, her husband's career has been going well, and last year he proposed a divorce citing incompatibility. The house and car were all pre-marital property, so she had no claim to them. Because she had not worked for many years, she had no ability to raise the two children on her own, and the son and daughter both had to go to the father.
In the end, she only received 300,000 yuan. This made her deeply realize that women should take care of their families and love their children, but they must not lose their ability to survive. When a marriage falls apart, one knows how important it is to have a sense of security. This story tells us that women in marriage should maintain their independence and autonomy, and cannot completely rely on their partner.
In this story, we can see that the status and role of women in marriage are extremely important. Women not only have to bear family responsibilities but also maintain their own careers and economic independence. Only in this way can they maintain an equal status in marriage and avoid getting into trouble because of losing their ability to survive.
