Did Liu Bei Really Care for His People When He Escaped with Them?
When Liu Bei escaped, why did he have to bring the civilians with him? This question has always been puzzling. Some say Liu Bei had the people's welfare at heart and loved them like his own children, which is why he brought them along. Others claim that Liu Bei was not a good person and only cared about himself, without regard for the civilians' lives. So, what's the truth?
Zhang Fei's take is that Brother Liu Bei had the people's welfare at heart and truly loved them like his own children. Zhang Fei's words sound reasonable. After all, Liu Bei did bring the civilians with him as he escaped, seemingly to protect them. However, Cao Cao has a different opinion, saying that Liu Bei abandoned his own wife and children at Changban Slope, so how could he be expected to care for the civilians?
So, did Liu Bei really care for his people, or was he just selfish? Only Liu Bei himself could answer this. However, based on historical records, it's undeniable that Liu Bei did bring the civilians with him as he escaped. The question is, what was his true motive? Unfortunately, we may never know.
