Common Physical Problems in the Elderly: Joint Issues and Chronic Organ Failure
As we age, our bodies undergo a variety of changes. Some of these changes are natural, while others are caused by disease or injury. Today, we're going to talk about common physical problems in the elderly, particularly joint issues and chronic organ failure.
Joint problems are one of the most common health issues among the elderly. Severe arthritis and osteoporosis can make daily activities painful, such as walking or getting up. Elderly people who suffer from hip fractures often have a poor recovery, leading to prolonged bed rest, and may even result in paralysis or quadriplegia. Spinal cord injuries are also a serious issue, potentially leading to lifelong disability.
In addition to joint problems, chronic organ failure is another common health issue among the elderly. Heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), late-stage diabetes (kidney failure, foot ulcers), and end-stage liver and kidney disease often occur simultaneously, posing significant challenges to the elderly. These diseases not only affect the physical health of older adults but also impact their mental health and quality of life.
