The Story of the Tortoise and the Hare: A Destructive Misreading
I have never understood why the story of the tortoise and the hare is worth referencing. This story has been retold time and time again, as if it can teach us some valuable lesson. But the more I think about it, the more I feel that this story is just a misinterpreted fable.
Did the tortoise win because of its persistence? Or was it because the hare fell asleep? If we follow this logic, it seems that the tortoise's victory is due to its greater effort and focus. But is this really the point of the story?
Let's try again. The fact is that in the field of racing, the tortoise will never be able to win against the hare. No matter how hard the tortoise tries, no matter how persistent it is, it cannot change its physical conditions and natural talents. What this story tells us is not about the importance of perseverance or effort, but about the cruelty of reality.
Why do we always try to find positive lessons in this story? Why do we always want to prove that the tortoise's victory is due to its effort, rather than the hare's mistake? I think it's because we don't want to face the cruelty of reality. We don't want to admit that many times, success or failure is not determined by our efforts, but by factors beyond our control.
