Consistency: The Secret to Making People Want to Get to Know You Better
Recently, someone on Soul asked me why some people are so natural and effortless in their conversations, making others want to get to know them better. After some thought, I came up with a key concept: consistency. It turns out that people are willing to continue getting to know someone because their conversation topics, social media posts, interests, and lifestyle all align, making them seem authentic. On the other hand, if someone's conversation is impressive, but their actual life is completely different, trust is lost.
I think this is because consistency creates a sense of security in social psychology. True, long-term attraction isn't about a single impressive sentence, but rather the fact that your words, actions, and lifestyle all corroborate each other. What others believe in isn't a single sentence, but a consistent and stable state. This consistency isn't just about verbal communication, but also about behavior and lifestyle.
For example, if you say you're an outdoorsy person in conversation, but your social media is full of photos of you gaming at home, people will think you're not genuine. Similarly, if you claim to be a bookworm, but there's no sign of reading in your lifestyle, people will think you're not authentic.
So, if you want people to be willing to get to know you better, the first thing you need to do is establish your authenticity. You need to make sure your conversation topics, social media posts, interests, and lifestyle all align, so people will think you're a genuine person. Only when you've established your authenticity can you make people want to get to know you better, or even like you.
