The Prostitute's Chastity: A Misunderstood Concept
When we mention "chastity," we often associate it with traditional social definitions, where women preserve their bodies and emotions, refraining from intimate relationships with multiple people. But can sex workers also possess chastity? Swedish sociologist Hanna Öberg's research provides a thought-provoking answer.
According to Hanna's research, sex workers, although having lost traditional social definitions of chastity, have created their own. They differentiate between their bodies, which can be enjoyed by anyone for a price, and their "true selves," protecting their values and dignity from shattering.
Hanna cites two striking examples. The first is a sex worker named Eliane, who makes a living in Paris. She habitually takes clients back to her home for business but always carefully prepares a special sheet for them to use. "I never let them lie directly on my bed," she says, "my sheets are my property, my symbol, where I can bury my head deep, where my scent is."
Eliane maintains that the body her clients receive is not her true body, and she never goes to bed without washing thoroughly after each encounter. This behavior may seem simple, but it reveals sex workers' unique attitude toward their bodies and emotions.
The kisses of prostitutes also hold significant meaning. For a respectable woman, the throat serves as a boundary: the area above is friendly and open, while the area below is strictly off-limits. Prostitutes, however, have a completely different standard; they reject traditional chastity but reserve their kisses for loved ones. Anna, another sex worker in Paris, says, "I never kiss; I pretend to cough or claim to have a cold, just to avoid having clients' faces in front of me, but I can use my mouth for oral sex."
The many taboos sex workers observe demonstrate their efforts to make certain parts priceless, representing value, soul, true self, and a faint hope for humanity. This is where the prostitute's chastity lies. So, there's a Chinese saying: 'A prostitute erects a memorial arch.' In a sense, it's not entirely impossible.
