Ancient Taboos: Do You Know the Reasons Behind Them?
Do you remember being told by your elders when you were younger not to look in the mirror at night, wash your hair, or point your shoes towards the bed? Why were there such taboos?
The living conditions in ancient times were vastly different from today. Copper mirrors were not very transparent and couldn't be used during the day, let alone at night. Without electric lights, people could only rely on candlelight or starlight, making it impossible to see themselves in the mirror.
Washing your hair was also a no-no. Without hair dryers, it was easy to catch a cold if you didn't dry your hair in time. Medical conditions were limited, and getting sick often meant death.
Not pointing your shoes towards the bed was also a result of the lack of electric lights. It would take a long time to go to the bathroom at night, and it was easy to trip and fall.
Combing your hair at midnight was another ancient taboo. In the dark, static electricity would make your hair stand up, and you wouldn't even notice it, let alone others who might be startled.
Although these ancient customs may seem ridiculous today, they also reflect the wisdom and creativity of our ancestors. We should believe in science, take the essence, and discard the dross, so our ancestors won't say we modern people are 'truly feudal'!
