Those Who Can Chat Will Not Be Unlucky: Casual Conversation Skills Are the Key to the Adult World
Many people have a misconception that to achieve success and build connections, one needs to have solid professional skills and impressive negotiation techniques. They think that casual conversations are a waste of time and that being introverted and not liking to talk is not a disadvantage. However, after years of struggling in society, I have discovered a truth: people who are truly successful and have endless opportunities have a significant advantage in their casual conversation skills.
Those seemingly purposeless and casual conversations are not ineffective social interactions. They are the highest level, most hidden, and most powerful way of interpersonal communication in the adult world. Many people misunderstand the essence of socializing. They think that as soon as they meet someone, they should talk about projects, exchange business cards, and make big promises. Every sentence is calculated, and people naturally become defensive, polite but distant.
Casual conversations are the most gentle way to break down this defense. You don't talk about benefits or transactions; you just chat about daily life and hobbies. There's no pressure, no sense of solicitation, and people's hearts slowly get closer in this relaxed atmosphere. Trust is established, and when opportunities arise, people will think of you first, the person who made them feel comfortable and trustworthy.
People who are good at casual conversations don't rely on their mouths; they rely on several invisible skills: empathy, knowing what to say and what not to say, and being able to sense the atmosphere. These skills are not taught in books or certified, but they are the core competitiveness in society.
Casual conversation skills are widening the gap. People with the same education and abilities, some have people helping them everywhere, while others work hard but never get opportunities. The difference often lies in their casual conversation skills.
In the workplace, those who don't know how to chat do the most but have the lowest presence. In business, those who talk about conditions from the start often hit a wall; those who chat like friends first often succeed naturally. In life, those who don't know how to chat have a smaller and smaller circle, and when they encounter problems, they are isolated and helpless. Your professional skills determine your upper limit, but your casual conversation skills determine how much help you can get and how many pitfalls you can avoid.
Don't use your introverted personality as an excuse. Casual conversation skills can be developed. First, learn to listen. Good casual conversations are 70% listening and 30% talking. Listen more and interrupt less, and respond with a nod at the right time. Even if you don't talk much, as long as you listen carefully, the other person will have a good impression of you. Second, start with light topics. Weather, food, movies, travel β everyone can join in.
Third, talk more about the other person and less about yourself. People are always most concerned about themselves. Put the topic on the other person, and they will appreciate you more. Fourth, don't be too serious, and don't argue about winning or losing. Casual conversations don't have standard answers; just laugh and move on. Winning an argument but losing someone's heart is not worth it.
Fifth, don't be afraid of awkward silences. Occasionally, silence is normal, and the more relaxed you are, the more natural it is. From childhood, we are educated to talk less and do more. So, many people spend their whole lives polishing their hard skills but neglect their casual conversation skills. It's not until years later that they realize β those seemingly useless casual conversations are actually the best way to open doors in the adult world.
Capable people never openly compete for benefits. They just use casual conversations to build relationships, establish trust, and let everything happen naturally. When you can casually chat with anyone, your life will become smoother and more successful.
