We often think of human nature as black and white, but the reality is far more nuanced. Every person has a good side, and every person is capable of behaving badly. The key is that when we're faced with sufficient gain, sufficient power, sufficient temptation, and sufficient low stakes, the other side of human nature is more likely to emerge. This isn't to say we should lose trust in others or give up trying to understand them. Truly mature people don't constantly test others; instead, they don't give human nature too much of a chance to misbehave, and they don't overestimate anyone. This way, we can avoid disappointment and hurt. We need to maintain a clear understanding and avoid blind optimism or excessive pessimism. When we recognize the complexity of human nature, we can interact with others more effectively. We no longer have overly high expectations of others, nor are we disappointed in our own behavior. Instead, we're more cautious in our dealings with everyone, neither blindly believing nor easily denying. This way, we can build more genuine and solid relationships. Of course, this requires sufficient self-awareness and emotional intelligence. We need to understand our weaknesses and flaws, and we need to learn to control our emotions and behavior. Only then can we better cope with the complexity of human nature and avoid being swayed by temptation and power.
