Indulgence in Modern Life: The Cost of Fighting Emptiness
In modern life, we often hear people talking about the concept of "indulgence". But what is indulgence, really? Is it truly a state of abandon and pleasure, as people imagine? In my view, indulgence is often a way for us to fight against the feeling of emptiness. We fill the void and unease in our hearts by constantly pursuing pleasure and satisfaction.
However, most indulgent behavior is actually painful. People often use various methods to escape reality, such as scrolling through their phones all day, playing games, overeating, or working excessively. These behaviors seem like indulgence and pleasure, but in reality, they are expressions of our inner fear and unease. We are afraid to face reality, afraid to acknowledge our powerlessness and helplessness, so we choose to escape.
For example, many people spend all day scrolling through social media, thinking that it brings them joy and satisfaction. But in reality, they are just escaping reality. They are afraid to face their own problems and dissatisfaction, so they become addicted to the virtual world. Similarly, many people work excessively, thinking that earning money can bring them a sense of security and satisfaction. But in reality, they are just covering up their own fears and unease.
So, how can we truly fight against the feeling of emptiness? I think we must first acknowledge our fears and unease, acknowledge our powerlessness and helplessness. Then, we need to find true meaning and purpose, find the goals and values we want to pursue. By doing so, we can truly fight against the feeling of emptiness and find inner peace and satisfaction.
