Chinese Women on the Streets of Thailand: A Difficult Life Abroad
During my trip to Pattaya, Thailand, I met a fellow Chinese woman who was soliciting customers under a coconut tree by the beach. We struck up a conversation, and she told me that she had ended up in Thailand after finding it too difficult to make a living in her line of work back home.
However, the competition in Thailand was fierce, and she was struggling to make ends meet. To save money, she had to stay in a hostel, and her life was extremely tough. At the time, she was considering moving to Singapore to try her luck. Her life was not easy, and it was heartbreaking to hear her story.
She was very aggressive in promoting herself, saying that since we were fellow countrymen, she could offer a discount. In the end, she even said she wouldn't charge anything if we would just accompany her to a hotel for the night, saying that her hostel was too poor and she had trouble sleeping at night... My friend was extremely cautious and politely declined! After all, it was hard to tell if what she said was true or not, and when you're abroad, safety always comes first.
Life abroad is always full of challenges and uncertainties, and for women like her, the pressure to survive is even greater. Although her choices may be controversial, we can't ignore the difficulties and helplessness behind her story.
