The Ambiguous Charm of Short-term Relationships: Exploring the Edge of Desire on Soul
I still remember the day I matched with her on Soul, and the system prompted 'You both like listening to the same song on rainy days.' Her profile picture was a blurry side face, with a signature 'Temporary is fine, don't be serious.' I thought this sentence was interesting, as if it revealed a hint of ambiguity.
We chatted for ten days, from rainy days to body temperature, and finally, she said 'We can try a short-term thing.' I thought we had reached a consensus, but on the eleventh night, I sent a message 'Let me know when you want to, I'm always available,' and she directly deleted me as a friend. Only when I replayed our conversation did I realize that in short-term relationships on Soul, both parties are walking on the edge of morality, and even if they have established a consensus, they cannot express their desires too explicitly, and ambiguity is the best protection.
Every day, we had to find excuses to chat a few sentences, performing that the relationship was still worth maintaining. When inviting each other out, we had to first spend money on dinner or coffee, giving each other enough buffer time, and couldn't skip directly to inviting each other to a hotel. My previous successful short-term relationship lasted for a long time because every time we met, we would first eat at her favorite noodle shop, and then naturally move on to the next step.
Short-term relationships are not single-player games. If the other person meets someone they want to be with long-term, you will be immediately discarded. This is the ambiguous charm of short-term relationships, which cannot be too direct or too ambiguous. Only in this delicate balance can we find true desire and pleasure.
